The Painting of “Cove” is a representation of the South Eastern Australian Coastline.
“Cove” is very unique in that it is the first painting I have done that contains all of the technical variations of the many dotting techniques which I use to display an image. With the colour background and the very subtle colour palette the painting has amazing depth. I really appreciate how, viewed from a distance, it has beautiful form and as you step closer and closer to the painting the intricacies begin to reveal themselves both in colour and form. I particularly like the white section whereby I have used variations of techniques to create movement within the blocked out detail.
This painting was very challenging and I used every technique of dotting I know. I created different elements using colours, shapes and direction to fill some of the spaces and represent the various elements of the scene. For me personally, I really like the elements achieved through using a very soft tone palette. The interesting thing with using such a soft palette is that the true image is not clear until the entire painting is finished, which as an artist, requires a commitment to remain true to subtleness rather than move towards boldness.
Fortunately my years of experience guide me to stay true to the image in believing that the completed work is going to be beautiful. I think that this piece is very beautiful and even though all of my works have a wow factor, I find this one to be particularly amazing because of its softness.
I am really happy with how it has turned out. It is a picture that does have a lot going on, quite busy in parts, but yet everywhere you look there is something interesting to look at with all the intricate details.
I have calculated that there are approximately 199,000 individual dots on this piece which has ended up being 720mm x 1110mm.
