Who are your Influences?

I love the Australian impressionists, classic landscape art. Namatjira, Boyd, McCubbin, Tom Roberts, If I can make my photos appear like an impressionist painting with beautiful soft light that takes you into that image I am happy.

I also love Charles Blackman, Russell Drysdale and Henry Olson, I could look at their works for days!

A few Photographers I love Yousuf Karsh, Dorothy Lange, Richard Woldendorp, Michael Kenna.

Where in Australian do you find is your best source of inspiration?

Any art gallery, or in a plane looking at the landscape or in the middle of nowhere.

What do you find are the most difficult subjects to capture/ paint/ draw?

Virgin bush where there is tall grass, eucalypts and nothing else, in the north it’s beautiful and a place of solace, but it’s so hard to communicate its beauty it in an image. I will get this right one day.

What makes you start to create a piece and how do you know when you are finished?

I love the outback / bush and remoteness and I am always “scoping scenes” taking photos and GPS marking spots, researching light and going back until it’s right. When the light is perfect for the scene I am happy. Sometimes I can visit a place everyday for a month before the light is perfect. You can’t photoshop perfect light.

Do you have an artwork you are most proud of and why?

My favourite image is Ribbon Dancer. I saw the image when I was on a charter flight I worked hard in the sky to make sure I have captured all the frames I needed to. I knew it was special straight away. I am proud because it’s in the China Art museums private collection and its Huge!

What is your favourite tool?

My Eyes and then my camera. I have had a camera in my hand since I was 7 and I would be devastated with out one and even more devastated if I couldn’t see the amazing landscape.

What would you like to achieve out of your art?

I am constantly striving to satisfy my own critique... there is a lot sitting on hard drives that will never get printed because I’m not happy with them, even though possibly someone might be. I hope my collection of images might evoke change and an appreciation for the environment and people around us, I fly over places and think this place is so special! or photograph people who have amazing stories and 99 % of the country doesn’t even know the place and or the story exists.

Where do you see yourself in a couple of years?

Hopefully in the passenger seat of a helicopter somewhere that not many people get to fly.
